Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met Aug. 27.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Elaine Jackson, B.J. Pigg, Amy Richey, and Leslie Ferrell. Holly Murphy and Bryan McCabe were absent. Five (5) members present and two (2) members absent. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.

President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

VISITORS:

There were no visitors.

ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA:

Deletion: Removed 9.3--6th grade Social Studies curriculum. This will be paid with a Title grant.

EXECUTIVE SESSION: There was no executive session meeting.

Resignation:

1. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Pigg to accept Destiny Blackwell's resignation as Pre-K aide effective at the end of the 2023/2024 school year. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye, and Pigg-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Substitute Teachers

2. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to employ Alisha Harmon as a full-time physical education substitute teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, per salary schedule. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Jackson to employ Hannah Howell as a full-time substitute teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, per salary schedule. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, Jackson- aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Assistant Coaches

4. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Ferrell to approve Mike Leverett and Paul Whittaker as assistant junior high softball coaches for the 2024/2025 school year. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye, and Pigg-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

5. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Richey to approve Jarrett Lambert as assistant junior high baseball coach pending background check for the 2024/2025 school year. Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye, Pigg- aye, Richey-aye, and Ferrell-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

PRINCIPAL REPORT:

Cell phones: The cell phone policy is working well. Students are cooperating.

FFA: Congratulations to FFA for winning first place at the Farmyard Follies held at the DuQuoin State Fair. There were 41 teams competing.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:

Telehealth: Ferrell Hospital cannot currently offer a telehealth clinic at the school. There was discussion about Dr. Reddy and a telehealth clinic. Mr. Crank will have the contract looked over and see if this is something we would like to implement.

State Funds: We will receive an additional $94,000 in state funding this year. The CPPRT (Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax) will decrease approximately $40,000 this year.

School Electronic Signs: Liberty sign was here yesterday, we should have a quote next month.

School Board Elections: The first day petitions can be filed is Tuesday, November 12, 2024 and the last day for filing is Monday, November 18, 2024.

Update on Projects:

Concrete work: The sidewalks around the baseball and softball fields are in progress.

Community Lighting Ceremony: We are going to have a community lighting ceremony at the fields. Light refreshments will be provided by the district and we are asking J.W. Pulliam to come and "flip the switch" on the lights. Community members will be able to see the lights, walk through the weight room and see the facilities outside the school. The date is pending completion of the concrete work. Miscellaneous items: The doors on the high school gym and two classrooms have been ordered. Bathroom partitions at the high school and grade school; roof on the portable building at the grade school; and base cove at the grade school are being scheduled around the student attendance days.

There have been a lot of positive comments about the projects around the school that have been completed.

Bryan McCabe entered the meeting at 7:22 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION:

We currently have (4) regular route drivers, (1) driver for students attending other schools for specialized instruction and (2) extracurricular drivers.

Bus #9 is awaiting repairs.

ATHLETICS:

Volleyball: There was discussion about the uniform shorts.

Ball field windscreens: There was discussion on removing part of the ball field windscreens so attendees could see both fields at the same time while sitting in the outfield to watch the games. Part of the screens have been taken down in the outfield for visibility for watching the games. It was suggested that no more screens be removed unless it is to center the screens on the fence.

OLD BUSINESS: There was no old business to discuss.

APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA:

6. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Jackson to approve the regular meeting minutes of July 23, 2024 minutes. Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

7. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Pigg to approve the bills and payroll as presented. Pigg-

aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, Jackson-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

8. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the treasurer's report and co-mingled account as presented. McCabe-aye, Jackson-aye, Pigg-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:

Press Plus Policy Reading Issue 116

9. A motion was made by Ferrell and seconded by Pigg to approve the Press Plus Policy Reading Issue 116. Ferrell-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

Review Bullying Policies

10. A motion was made by Ferrell and seconded by Jackson to approve the review of board policy 7:180 Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation, and Harassment along with the FY 2024/2025 school book, section V, Bullying Prevention was reviewed and no changes were deemed necessary.. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, Jackson-aye, Ferrell-aye, and Pribble-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

Pre-K Tree Removal

11. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Pigg to approve Stone's Outdoor Services to remove the dead tree, stump, and tree debris for $2,000. Pribble-aye, Pigg-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, McCabe- aye, and Jackson-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

Sonitrol Security

12. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to approve security control installation quote for the Bus Barn of $7,651.49, with an additional monthly monitoring fee of $55.00. Ferrell-aye, Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

13. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to approve security control installation quote for the Athletic building of $7,312.43, with an additional monthly monitoring fee of $65.00. Ferrell-aye, Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.

14. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Ferrell to adjourn at 8:13 p.m. Ferrell-aye, Jackson-aye,

Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe-aye. Six (6) ayes, motion carried.
