State Senator Dale Fowler | Illinois State Senator
On October 3, State Senator Dale Fowler joined local officials to mark the start of significant improvements to Old Golconda Road. This project aims to address safety concerns due to frequent flooding in the area.
“These improvements are long overdue for an area that has historically faced significant safety risks due to flooding,” said Senator Fowler. “When severe weather hits, the road becomes prone to dangerous flooding, creating serious concerns for residents.”
The project is supported by a $500,000 grant secured by Senator Fowler through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). The funds will be used to elevate a section of Old Golconda Road, enhancing access during severe weather conditions.
“This funding will bring a greater sense of security and safety to the community,” Senator Fowler added. “Raising the road will ensure that residents can travel safely, and essential services can reach those who need them, even in the most challenging conditions.”
Kristin Richards, Director of DCEO, commented on Illinois' infrastructure: “Illinois’ infrastructure is ranked among the best in the nation. The State of Illinois continues to prioritize investing in our world-class infrastructure that provides numerous efficient geographic advantages and economic opportunities throughout the state.”
Historically, when the Ohio River rises, Golconda has had to close its floodgate, isolating it from Pope County. Elevating this road aims to prevent such closures and maintain crucial access.
Brian Ziegler, Pope County Engineer stated: “The County brought this problem to Senator Fowler a few years ago and he has worked tirelessly to obtain funding for these improvements. Senator Fowler should be commended for his persistence to see this through and bring the necessary dollars to Pope County.”
Tim Wallace, Chairman of the Pope County Board expressed gratitude: “Pope County appreciates Senator Fowler helping make this project a reality. These road improvements should help keep the city of Golconda from being shut off from traffic... Should the floodgates ever be closed again, this is a lifeline to the city and its residents.”
The completion of these roadway improvements is anticipated in early 2025.
