A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City Of Harrisburg Finance Department regarding sales tax records on October 25, 2024. The request was made by SE Illinois News, a media organization dedicated to delivering comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our quest for transparency and accountability, we asked for specific details about the sales tax collected from retailers since the beginning of the year. We requested data that would provide a comparison between the actual sales tax collected each month and what was projected. Additionally, we sought information about the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month.
Furthermore, we requested names of each retailer and their gross retail sales reported for each month. As a media organization, access to public records is crucial in fulfilling our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
We believe that as members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await a positive response from the City Of Harrisburg Finance Department as this information will aid us in providing comprehensive reports on local government financial activities.
