In 1994, Congress issued Joint Resolution 413, declaring November 1st as Family Literacy Day. This day is observed annually to highlight the importance of family literacy and its role in developing children's communication skills. It serves as a reminder that learning extends beyond school and into the home. Parents are encouraged to create opportunities for bonding with their children through reading and other educational activities.

The Illinois House Republicans have established The Literacy Improves Future Endeavors (LIFE) working group, which aims to enhance literacy among future generations. The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant learning loss in key literacy areas for many students. The group's mission is to restore and improve literacy across Illinois, ensuring students have the necessary skills for success in life. Their statewide plan focuses on retaining and recruiting teachers, improving student outcomes, and empowering parents to engage more with educators.

State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton), head of the LIFE working group, emphasizes the significance of Family Literacy Day as an opportunity for parents to connect with their children through reading. "I miss the days of reading books to my son and my grandsons," Severin said. He noted that issues with students falling behind in literacy achievement stem from factors such as reduced book reading at home due to distractions like video games.

Severin has addressed this gap by hosting a summer reading program offering rewards like a pool party for families who participate. On Family Literacy Day, he encourages constituents to read with their children or grandchildren: "Grab a great book... make a strong connection by reading."

Today highlights the critical role families play in enhancing children's education through fundamental literacy skills. Families are urged to lead by example at home and engage actively with their children.
