State Senator Dale Fowler welcomed around 70 high school students from 14 schools to Mtn Dew Park in Marion on October 30 for his annual Student Advisory Council. The event aimed to engage students in discussions about state government, leadership, and public policy.
“I look forward to hosting this event every year and bringing students from all over the 59th Senate District together for a conversation on state government, leadership and the importance of having a voice,” said Sen. Fowler. “I’m always so impressed by the students and their willingness and desire to be involved, learn more, and embrace the idea of being future leaders in their communities.”
The council provides a hands-on experience for local area students interested in government and public service. Each high school within the district nominates participants who have shown an interest in these areas.
Addi Lawler from Marion High School expressed her motivation: “I wanted to participate because it seemed like a fun thing to do.” She emphasized the importance of youth voices: “I feel like we should have a bigger voice because we are growing up and we are seeing the effects of not having a voice.”
Briley McBride from Vienna High School appreciated hearing from community speakers: “We’re able to hear from great speakers who bring a lot of insight from our community.” She noted that the event has increased her interest in politics.
Students listened to community leaders such as Russell Williams, TW Norman, and Rodney Cabaness before working in groups to develop ideas for new state legislation. These proposals were later presented to the full council.
Miana Tarver from Carbondale Community High School highlighted youth involvement: “We are the future... It’s good to form your opinion now and let it grow in the future.”
Cooper Guetersloh from Crab Orchard High School shared how the event helped him communicate better: “It has helped me be able to talk to people more. It has helped me figure out the world more honestly.” He stressed understanding governmental roles as vital for future generations.
Senator Fowler participated actively during group discussions, offering guidance on advocacy strategies. When presenting their ideas, he encouraged further debate by questioning groups about their legislative proposals.
Zykies Roberson from Cairo High School described his first-time experience positively: “It’s been a good learning experience... I like the energy and overall vibe.”
The students selected one proposal for discussion at a mock committee hearing scheduled for spring at the State Capitol.
