Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met Oct. 22.
Here are the minutes provided by the board:
The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Bryan McCabe, B.J. Pigg, Holly Murphy, and Amy Richey. Elaine Jackson and Leslie Ferrell were absent. Five (5) members present and two (2) members absent. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 6:52 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.
President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.
VISITORS:
Members of the Galatia FFA (Future Farmers of America) club were in attendance: Aiden Ferrel, Connor Graham, Wyatt Arnold and Tim Arnold, advisor.
The members in attendance asked permission on behalf of the FFA to attend the 2024 National FFA Convention on October 23rd and 24th, 2024. The conference is at the Indianapolis Convention Center, Indianapolis, IN. They will spend one night. Mrs. Amy Richey will be the female chaperone. FFA will pay all expenses.
Wyatt Arnold asked permission on behalf of the FFA to attend the FFA Build Leadership Conference on November 25th and 26th, 2024. The conference is at the Illinois State University, Normal, IL. Wyatt Arnold, senior and Ava Marvel, junior will attend.
Field Trip-FFA
1. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Pigg to approve FFA students to attend the 2024 FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, IN., on October 23rd and 24th, 2024, with a one night stay. All expenses to be paid by the FFA. Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
Field Trip-FFA
2. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Pigg to approve FFA students to attend the FFA Build Leadership Conference for juniors and seniors at Illinois State University in Normal, IL, on November 25th and 26th, 2024. All expenses to be paid by the FFA. Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey- aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
The visitors left the meeting at 7:00 p.m.
ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA: There were no additions or deletions to the agenda.
EXECUTIVE SESSION: There was no executive session meeting.
Student Agreement
3. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to accept the in lieu of expulsion agreement for student 2024-01. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
PRINCIPAL REPORT:
CTE (Career and Technical Education) Workshop: Danyelle Douglass, Heather Anderson, and Ashley Launius attended a CTE workshop. The information learned included coding classes, programs, and certifying teachers. This information will be used to make changes for the next year and to increase CTE funding.
Current Events:
PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Day: October 18th was the PBIS day at the JH/HS.
Haunted House: The sophomore class fundraiser will be this weekend October 26th from 7-9 p.m. at the high school.
Red Ribbon Week: This week is Red Ribbon week at elementary school with daily activities.
Homecoming Week: November 12th-15th will be homecoming week with Red and White night on November 15th.
Ashley Launius left the meeting at 7:05 p.m.
SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:
Tax Levy: The tax levy will be posted by October 28th at the Central Office. We will not exceed our usual increase of 4.99%.
School Report Card: All three schools received a rating of commendable, the second highest rating we have receive. Last year the elementary school received the rating of exemplary, this year they raised the cut score to meet exemplary the designation.
Telehealth: The contract has been sent to our attorney for review and there are a few changes that will need to be made.
Aflac: We made the switch to AFLAC this year. The customer service has been great. We are currently working with Equitable on a 403B plan for our employees.
Building Projects:
Fire Proof Doors: The doors have been delayed by other companies, but will be installed as soon as they are available.
Bathroom Partitions: The partitions are in and will be installed soon.
Financial: We are already a quarter of the way through the fiscal year. After analyzing the spending we are at 25% of our allotted budget.

TRANSPORTATION:
Bus #9: Repairs have been made to Bus #9 and is back service. All buses are in service.
ATHLETICS:
Junior High Softball and Baseball: The seasons are finished. The baseball team won their regional championship on September 30th. They ended their season with a loss at the state tournament on October 5th. Congratulations to the all-conference players: Olive Launius, all-conference softball, Addy J Allen and Bryleigh Mohler, all- conference softball honorable mention. Bryce Jenkins and Ryne Foster, all-conference baseball, Peyton Bell all-conference baseball honorable mention.
High School Volleyball: Regionals start October 29th at Edwards County. Congratulations Hollyn McCabe for earning all-tournament team at the Webber Smackdown Tournament September 28th Senior volleyball players were honored on October 10th. Our seniors: McKayla Williams, Isabella Hyers, Izzy Clarida, Tessa Blevins, and Whitney Weber.
Fall Sports Seniors: We also honored other senior's participation in fall sports at the last home volleyball games. Those honored were Bailey Downing and AJ Downing-Cross Country, and Eli Hankins-Golf.
Cross Country: October 26th will be the regional meet at Massac County. Our team participated in the GEC Conference meet on October 17th. Congratulations Bailey Downing for winning the girls race and Haleigh Oslay medaling in 4th place. The boys took home 2nd place as a team. Congratulations Colin Jenkins for medaling individual in 4th place.
JH Basketball: The girls started their season at the New Simpson Hill Tournament on October 14th. The boys started their season at the Galatia Jr. High shootout on October 19th.
APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA:
4. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Murphy to approve the budget hearing and regular meeting minutes of September 19th, 2024. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe- aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
5. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to approve the bills and payroll as presented.

NEW BUSINESS:
FY24 Audit: Mr. Crank shared that there was no material findings and we received a financial rating of 3.6 with 4 being the best. The 3.6 was determined due to expenses vs revenue. We had expensed a large grant expenditure but the revenue was not received until July. ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) sometimes will go back and give a higher rating. Either way we are in really good shape with almost a full year's worth of cash on hand.
FY25 School Maintenance Grant
7. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Pigg to approve the maintenance grant application for $50,000. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
November Board Meeting Date
8. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by McCabe to change the November board meeting date from the 26th to the 19th. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
Tax Levy Hearing Date
A hearing date will not be needed with the aggregated levy increase at 4.99%. The tax levy will be posted at Central Office on October 28th, 2024 and formally approved at the November 19th, 2024 board meeting.
Ballfield Gate
9. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Murphy to install an entrance gate in the middle of the high school baseball field fence. The cost will be $2,950.00 and will be installed by H. E. Mitchell. Murphy- aye, Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
Field Trip-FBLA
10. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by McCabe to approve FBLA's (Future Business Leaders of
America) field trip to the Murray State University Telecommunications Systems Management & Computer Science program at Murray, KY., on December 5th, 2024. Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Murphy- aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
