State Representative Patrick Windhorst has called for immediate reforms following the guilty verdicts against former Democratic House Speaker Mike Madigan. Madigan was found guilty on ten counts, including public corruption, bribery, and wire fraud.
Windhorst emphasized the need for Illinois to address corruption with robust ethics reforms. "Arrests, indictments, prison sentences, governors in prison, Chicago Alderman busted for bribery, the list goes on," he stated. He highlighted that Madigan's conviction should serve as a critical moment for legislative action.
Windhorst urged his colleagues to take this opportunity seriously: "Hopefully, this guilty verdict will be the wake-up call House Democrats will actually pay attention to and finally move on badly-needed ethics and corruption reforms." He advocated for measures such as ending the transition of lawmakers into lobbyists and granting subpoena power to the legislative inspector general.
He concluded by stressing the importance of enacting strong anti-corruption policies to restore public trust in state governance. "Inaction on this topic is now inexcusable. It’s time to get to work."
