Democratic legislators have advanced Senate Bill 8, known as the Safe Gun Storage and Reporting Act. This bill proposes to reduce the time frame for reporting lost or stolen firearms to local law enforcement from 72 to 48 hours. In cases of repeated violations, individuals may face substantial fines or even revocation of their Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card.

Republican lawmakers have voiced their opposition, suggesting the bill penalizes responsible gun owners rather than addressing criminal behavior. They emphasized the challenge for gun owners to notice a missing firearm within the proposed 48-hour window, particularly when firearms are stored in safes, seasonal cabins, or vehicles that are not inspected daily.

The Republicans argue that the bill imposes a uniform mandate that may unjustly target responsible gun owners for situations beyond their control.

Senate Bill 8 is now set to proceed to the House for additional deliberation.
