State Senator Dale Fowler | Illinois State Senator
State Senator Dale Fowler welcomed students from the 59th Senate District to the Illinois State Capitol as part of his Student Advisory Council program. This initiative is designed to give students a practical understanding of government operations and the legislative process.
Students toured the Capitol, visited the Senate chamber, and explored the workings of state government. They heard from a representative of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and had the chance to meet Illinois Lt. Governor Julianna Stratton before engaging in a mock committee debate.
“Each year, I look forward to welcoming students to the Capitol and giving them a firsthand look at the legislative process,” said Senator Fowler. “These young leaders are the future of our state, and helping them understand how government works encourages them to use their voice and be active participants in the democratic process.”
Participants, many visiting the Capitol for the first time, found the event significant. Brooklyn Biggerstaff, a senior at Eldorado High School, expressed her longstanding interest in politics. Shelonda Johnson from Cairo Elementary School noted the relevance of politics to students’ futures. Troy Robinson, a senior at Marion High School, highlighted the impact of government policies on individuals.
Eden Anderson, a senior at Crab Orchard High School, commented on the event’s value, saying it provides firsthand experience in understanding governmental operations.
Senator Fowler emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “These students represent the future of our country and our state. It’s so important for them to see that their voice matters and that their involvement in state government can make a real difference.”
The program, held annually, invites high school students from the district to participate. Interested students are encouraged to reach out to their principals or superintendents for further details.
