State Senator Dale Fowler | Illinois State Senator
State Senator Dale Fowler recently acknowledged the commendable actions of Pope County first responders at the Illinois State Capitol. On May 13, members of the Rural Pope County EMS and the Rural Pope County Fire Protection District were awarded a Certificate of Recognition during the 32nd Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighting Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony.
The recognition was given for their lifesaving efforts on June 2, 2024, when they responded to a medical emergency involving Darrin Barton, who suffered a severe heart attack while on a boat. The responders swiftly transferred Mr. Barton from the boat to an ambulance and began critical care as he went into full cardiac arrest. Their prompt response was crucial in stabilizing him and saving his life.
Senator Fowler expressed his admiration for their service, stating: “The heroics and teamwork shown by the Pope County EMS and Fire Protection District are a testament to the kind of commitment we see every day from first responders in Southern Illinois.” He added that it was an honor to thank them personally for their courage.
Mr. Barton attended the ceremony, attributing his survival to the team's efforts: “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. They went above and beyond.”
The individuals recognized included Chief Joshua Light, Assistant Chief Brandon Dalton, Captain Breyer Clark, Lieutenant Billy Dalton, among others who played essential roles in this rescue operation.
Deputy Devin Graves commented on receiving recognition as a unit: “It’s great that we’re being recognized as a unit.” EMT Ladonna Risley remarked on their routine work leading to such acknowledgment: “We were just doing our job that day,” she said. "And here we are, months later, getting an award for something we do every day."
Chief Joshua Light noted the significance of receiving such recognition in Southern Illinois: “For such a small rural area, it’s amazing to receive this award.”
This annual ceremony honors firefighters and first responders statewide for acts of bravery and distinguished service.
