With the Fourth of July approaching, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the State Fire Marshal's office are emphasizing fireworks safety and adherence to state regulations.

Under the Illinois Explosives Act, only licensed professionals are authorized to handle display fireworks. The IDNR is responsible for licensing and storage certification for these explosives. Meanwhile, the Office of the State Fire Marshal regulates approved consumer fireworks, which are permitted only in communities that allow them by ordinance.

Officials highlighted the risks associated with fireworks, noting 156 injuries and one death during the most recent reporting period. Mortars, roman candles, bottle rockets, and sparklers were identified as the primary sources of injuries.

Residents are advised to attend licensed public displays instead of attempting their own fireworks shows.

For emergencies or to report violations, individuals can contact IDNR at 217-782-9976 or OSFM at 217-785-0969.
