Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met July 22.
Here are the minutes provided by the board:
The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Bryan McCabe, B.J. Pigg, Holly Murphy, Amy Richey, Tiffany Baird, and Mike Cummins. Seven (7) members present. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 6:53 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.
President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.
VISITORS:
There were no visitors.
ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA:
There were no additions/deletions to the agenda.
EXECUTIVE SESSION:
1. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to enter Executive Session at 6:56 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity; matters of student discipline or review executive session minutes. McCabe-aye, Cummins-aye, Murphy-aye, Baird-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and Pigg-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
2. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to end Executive Session at 7:30 p.m. Cummins- aye, Pigg-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Baird-aye, and McCabe-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
3. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Pigg to approve the Executive Session minutes. Murphy- aye, Baird-aye, Pribble-aye, Pigg-aye, Richey-aye, McCabe-aye, and Cummins-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
Resignation
4. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to accept Melissa Kragness's resignation as an elementary permanent substitute teacher effective at the end of the 2024/2025 school year. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Baird-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, Cummins-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
Full Time Substitute Teacher
5. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to employ Briley Janaskie as a full-time substitute teacher pending special education licensure, per salary schedule, and a background check. McCabe-aye, Baird-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, Cummins-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
Individual Aide
6. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Cummins to employ Kristie Bebout as an individual aide pending a background check. Baird-aye, Richey-aye, Cummins-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
Full Time Permanent Substitute Teacher
7. A motion was made by Baird and seconded by Pribble to employ Madison Hungate as an elementary full- time permanent substitute teacher. Baird-aye, Richey-aye, Cummins-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, Pigg- aye, and McCabe-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
JH Baseball Assistant Coach
8. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Pigg to approve Timothy Varbel as a junior high baseball assistant coach for the 2025/2026 school year. Murphy-aye, Baird-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Cummins-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
PRINCIPAL REPORT:
Safety Care Training Day 1: July 31st will be our first training day for all our Brownsville/Norris City annex/Eldorado CD Room full time individual aides, substitute individual aides, and Kim Jenkins (bus driver) that are required to attend this training day. All staff wishing to further their skills and receive this certification can attend. Day 2 of the training will take place after school starts just for the above mentioned required staff.
New Teacher Orientation: August 4th will be new teacher orientation.
SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:
Generators: The school architect will be getting a bid put out for us. The Village of Galatia has also indicated they will review the request for financial support at their next meeting.
Building & Grounds: General cleaning and small projects are still going on this summer, but we are substantially ready for students. Morris Excavating is completing some ditch work around the bus barn and we will bid out ventilation fans at the end of the month.
Audit: The onsite audit has been completed. The audit seems to going very well with no major findings initially indicated. The completion of the audit will be later in the fall.
Annual Safety Meeting: July 28th will be our annual meeting with the Saline County Police. They will review our safety plan and make suggestions to improve the plan.

Recall: Rick Pittman, district mechanic, took Bus #5 to Sikeston, MO. to have it repaired.

9. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to approve the regular meeting minutes of June 24, 2025. Cummins-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Baird-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
10. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Cummins to approve the bills and payroll as presented. Pigg-aye, Baird-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Cummins-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
11. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by Baird to approve the treasurer's report and co-mingled account as presented. McCabe-aye, Cummins-aye, Murphy-aye, Pigg-aye, Baird-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
Press Plus Issue 119 Reading
12. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Cummins to approve the Press Plus Issue 119 reading. McCabe-aye, Cummins-aye, Murphy-aye, Baird-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and Pigg-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
Seal Executive Session Minutes
13. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Murphy to seal the Executive Session minutes from July 2024 to December 2024. Pigg-aye, Baird-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Cummins-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
Destroy Executive Session Recording
14. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Pigg to destroy the Executive Session Recordings from July 2023-December 2023. Murphy-aye, Baird-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Cummins-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

Tabled until the bids have been received.
School Bus
Tabled until August board meeting.
FY25/26 Budget Hearing
15. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Baird to set the budget hearing for September 30, 2025 at 6:45 p.m. Murphy-aye, Baird-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Cummins-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.
