As the harvest season progresses in Illinois, farmers are spending long hours in the fields, leading to an increase in large agricultural equipment on rural roads. Drivers are being urged to exercise caution and patience when encountering slow-moving tractors and combines.
A study from the University of Illinois-Chicago found that between 2018 and 2023, there was an average of nearly 530 crashes each year involving agricultural vehicles on Illinois roadways.
State Senator Dale Fowler emphasized both the importance of recognizing farmers' efforts and the need for increased safety during this busy period. "Harvest season is a time to recognize the hard work of our farmers, but also a moment to increase caution on rural roads. He urges motorists to slow down, give large equipment plenty of space, and for farmers to use visible lights and signals so everyone can stay safe during this harvest season."
Fowler has represented Illinois's 59th Senate District since his election in 2017 as a Republican, succeeding Gary Forby.
