Jim Edgar, the 38th Governor of Illinois, died on September 14, 2025, at the age of 79 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Edgar served as governor from 1991 to 1999 and was recognized for his commitment to public service and bipartisanship.

During his tenure, Edgar addressed significant issues including the state budget deficit and implemented reforms in education, welfare, and child protection. He also led the state during the Great Flood of 1993.

Edgar began his career as a legislative intern for the Illinois General Assembly before serving as an Illinois State Representative and later as Illinois Secretary of State. He was elected governor in 1990.

After leaving office, Edgar continued his involvement in public advocacy through initiatives such as The Jim Edgar Fellow Program, which aims to train future leaders in public policy.

Visitation services were held at the Illinois State Capitol on September 19, followed by memorial services on September 20.

Dale Fowler has represented Illinois' 59th Senate District since being elected in 2017. More information about Senator Fowler can be found at https://senatorfowler.com/about/.
