Southern Illinois is known for its long-standing tradition of hunting and fishing, with abundant natural resources, forests, lakes, rivers, and a variety of locations for outdoor activities. Early settlers relied on these resources for food, and while modern conveniences have reduced the need to hunt or fish for sustenance, the traditions continue to be popular among residents.
In recent years, hunting and fishing have also become important sports in southern Illinois schools. Trapshooting and bass fishing teams are gaining popularity at both public and private institutions. The growing interest has led to students earning scholarships to continue participating in these activities at colleges and universities.
The region attracts families and tourists from across the country each fall who come to harvest white-tailed deer, Illinois’ official mammal. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reported that more than 170,000 white-tailed deer were harvested during the 2024-2025 hunting seasons through various methods such as archery, shotguns, and muzzleloaders.
Several state representatives serve districts with significant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Patrick Windhorst represents the 117th district, which includes parts of Shawnee National Forest, Cache River State Natural Area, Fort Massac State Park with access to the Ohio River, and Lake of Egypt—a 2,300-acre reservoir known for bass, crappie, and catfish fishing. Windhorst was elected as a Republican in 2023 to replace Natalie Phelps Finnie as representative of the 117th House District (https://ballotpedia.org/Patrick_Windhorst).
“If you’re looking to hunt some of the biggest white-tailed deer you’ll find anywhere in the world, or if you’re looking to catch the biggest bass and catfish or the tastiest crappie, southern Illinois is the place you want to go,” said Windhorst. “We have a great tradition of hunting and fishing and the dozens of state parks, lakes, and forests. Come to southern Illinois and experience what we have to offer!”
Dave Severin represents the 116th district near Rend Lake and Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area—sites popular with campers, hunters, anglers year-round—and hosts events like fishing tournaments and hunts for disabled veterans.
“I am blessed to represent a district rich in natural resources and tourist attractions like Rend Lake and the Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area,” Severin said. “We have a rich hunting and fishing tradition in southern Illinois, and it is indeed big business, as hunting and fishing tourism continues to be an economic driver for the region. In Illinois our politics may get ugly at times but no one can argue that the southern Illinois region is anything but beautiful. Our state parks and recreation areas are a big contributor to that natural beauty.”
David Friess’ 115th district features Sparta World Shooting & Recreational Complex—a large facility hosting major sport shooting events.
“The Sparta Shooting Complex has long been a cornerstone of Southern Illinois values. The Shooting Complex brings families and young people together to enjoy the outdoors and learn about conservation,” Friess said. “I want to thank Skip Klinger...and all employees who support...they are passionate advocates for our youth...That’s why I proudly sponsored HB2327...which allows 14- and 15-year-olds to work as scorers in...Championships while ensuring their safety. We must continue to encourage our young people to get outside...I will keep fighting for these Southern Illinois values.”
Hunting and fishing remain integral parts of southern Illinois culture—supporting education opportunities for youth through scholarships; drawing tourists; supporting economic development; preserving green spaces; maintaining historical traditions.
