Two years have passed since the October 7, 2023 attack in Israel, when Hamas militants launched a deadly assault resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people. Among those killed were over 800 civilians and more than 40 Americans. The attack included mass killings in at least 22 Israeli communities and military outposts, with more than 250 hostages taken by Hamas, including ten Americans.

Following the attacks, Israel began a large-scale offensive in Gaza. Since then, ongoing violence has led to the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians and nearly 2,000 Israelis. Hamas leaders have said their actions were in response to decades of what they describe as Israeli oppression, which includes casualties among Palestinians and the blockade of Gaza.

Currently, reports indicate that Hamas still holds 48 hostages; it is believed that about 20 are alive, including two U.S. citizens. Negotiations for hostage releases and cease-fire agreements have not resulted in progress. Israel maintains its demands for the return of all hostages, disarmament of Hamas, and full control over Gaza as conditions for ending military operations.

The conflict has created severe humanitarian challenges in Gaza. Over two million people are facing extreme hunger and lack access to basic needs. More than 150,000 people have been injured since October 2023. Damage from air strikes has severely disrupted food supplies and overwhelmed medical facilities.

President Trump recently put forward a peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict by providing economic and humanitarian assistance to help rebuild Gaza and promote stability in the region.

Patrick Windhorst was elected as a Republican representative to Illinois’s State House for the state’s 117th District in 2023 after succeeding Natalie Phelps Finnie.
