Earlier this year, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) released proposed schedules for waterfowl hunting seasons in Illinois. Among the suggested changes was a plan that would have prevented waterfowl hunting during the traditional Christmas holiday break.

State Representative Patrick Windhorst, who was elected to represent the 117th House District in 2023 as a Republican, shared concerns from his constituents about this change with IDNR officials. Windhorst advocated for reversing the proposal to allow families to hunt together during the Christmas break. More information about Windhorst’s election and background can be found at https://www.ilga.gov/house/Rep.asp?GA=103&MemberID=3220.

“The proposed change sparked a large response of displeasure to be expressed by southern Illinois waterfowl hunting enthusiasts to both my office and to the Department,” Windhorst said. “I am pleased to let my constituents know that their voice has been heard, and that the Department will host public meetings to discuss the 2026-2030 waterfowl hunting seasons.”

The IDNR has scheduled two public meetings in November for residents to provide input on future waterfowl season dates and splits. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Southern Illinois University’s Lawson Hall in Carbondale. The second meeting is set for Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Carlyle High School’s cafeteria and commons area in Carlyle.

“I encourage anyone who is interested in obtaining information on the 2026-2030 waterfowl hunting season timing, zone splits, and timing splits to attend these informational meetings,” Windhorst said. “Your opinion can make a difference. Let your voice be heard on this issue.”
