From styled locks and lacquered nails to welding and electric technology, high school juniors and seniors recently explored career options with hands-on learning at Southeastern Illinois College’s (SIC) Applied Technology Spotlight Day.
SIC’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department sponsored the event to publicize the many career options available to young adults. Programs range from childhood education, cosmetology, IT and criminal justice to biofuels, welding, diesel and coal mining technology.
Approximately 135 students attended the event, learning not just about the subject matter, but also aspects of student life and financial aid. Lori Cox, associate dean of workforce and community education, said the event allows students to get a head start on making life choices.
The event featured guest speakers from BWX Technologies, including Operations Manager Jake Gill, electrician Bobby McGuire and welder Chris Stacey, who shared first-hand information about what companies are looking for in potential employees — such as initiative.
“A large part of being successful as an employee is seeing a need and filling it,” McGuire said. “In the absence of orders, you go find something to do. This will help you rise to the top among your co-workers.”
SIC’s spring semester begins Jan. 9, and registration is still open. For more information, visit www.sic.edu or call 618-252-5400.
