Rebecca "Becky" Borgsmiller recently announced her candidacy for the John A. Logan College (JALC) Board of Trustees.

Borgsmiller launched her campaign for a six-year term on the board on Feb. 2 at a meet-and-greet event at the 17th Street Warehouse.

Borgsmiller has a long history with the college, from student to part-time faculty to member of the board. After 25 years of leadership positions at the college, she retired and moved into banking. After serving for nine years in various positions -- including vice president and chief operating officer -- she is ready to step up once again for JALC.

After her initial meet and greet, Borgsmiller took to social media to thank her supporters.

"Last night, the room was full of people, many of whom have known me for more years than we care to admit, and others whom I just met," she posted. "While our group was diverse in so many ways, we all share a common interest, the welfare of John A. Logan College -- and together we can make a difference!"

Like many Illinois colleges, JALC faces financial challenges due to the state's ongoing budget issues. The JALC board laid off 55 faculty and staff members in 2016 amid public protests.

The state's failure to fund higher education resulted in a $10 million shortfall, one-third of the college's budget.
