Richland County Elementary students got quite a surprise on May 15 when Gov. Bruce Rauner paid them a virtual visit via Skype and promised more to come in the form of a pizza party.

“What a fun experience!" Rauner said, according to a press release. "Ms. Hardy’s second graders at Richland County Elementary School are the first students I’ve ever Skyped with. We’re so proud of all our teachers and students who are learning in truly unique ways. Education is the most important thing we do as a state. I can’t wait to get down to Olney and meet all the students at our pizza party this summer!”

The online chat was part of Rauner's recent #GovClassroomVisit contest in which schools, teachers and students sent in videos showing off the innovative techniques used in classrooms. Rauner vowed to visit the top five vote-getters but couldn't make it to Richland before classes ended.

Hardy’s class combine tactile learning with all of its subjects, using Legos to help with reading, building robots and working on writing skills.
