Patrick Windhorst, Massac County state's attorney and Republican candidate for the Illinois House 118th District, is spearheading a petition against a proposed progressive income tax while taking aim at opponent Rep. Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) and other lawmakers for supporting it.
Through the candidate's Facebook page and the Citizens for Patrick Windhorst website, Windhorst is leading the opposition of a state constitutional amendment to be placed on the upcoming ballot that he says would result in huge income-tax hikes for Illinois families.
"Politicians in Springfield are pushing to pass a progressive income tax by May 6th which would result in massive tax hikes on middle class families and small businesses," Windhorst's Facebook post states. "Rep. Phelps-Finnie supports the idea of a progressive income tax hike."
Windhorst has focused much of his campaign on the issue of taxes and says he wants to put a stop to the state's cycle of debt and tax hikes.
"The average taxpayer in Illinois is getting crushed, and yet, the state doesn’t pay its bills," Windhorst's campaign website states. "State government is over $200 billion in pension debt, but the politicians keep coming back for more of your money. We must stop this cycle."
