Mount Carmel City Clerk Rudy Witsman announced that because of COVID-19 and its far-reaching effects on the economy and its citizens, the city is putting a hold on water bill late penalties and disconnects.
"The City strongly urges water customers to continue to pay their accounts during this time. If you can’t pay your total bill the City encourages you to at least make a partial payment," Witsman said, according to WSJD.
Witsman said in the statement that the policy would be in place due to "health and financial difficulties" for the city's water customers. While customers are still required to pay for water use, the policy means they will not incur penalties or have their water disconnected, according to the news agency.
The statement from Witsman does not address what will happen when the COVID-19 stay at home order is lifted.
