Wabash Valley College issued the following announcement on July 14
Olney Central College is excited to announce line dancing classes are returning this fall.
“I’m anxious to get back,” said Instructor Vickie Smith, who has been teaching the classes since 2003. “A lot of the same people signed up every semester and I have really missed them.”
In addition to familiar faces, Smith hopes to welcome new students as classes resume.
“This is the perfect time to get involved,” she said. “The class has been out for a year so it will be more of a beginner’s lesson. I would encourage anyone who is interested to come out and try the class. People can come in and observe the first night to see what it’s like before signing up.”
Smith notes line dancing is an excellent form of exercise for people of all ages and a great way to meet new people. Over the years, participants have ranged in age from their mid-20s to 80s.
“The nice thing about line dancing is that you can do the dances regardless of whether you have a partner or not,” she added.
While line dancing is most closely associated with country music, Smith says it encompasses much more.
“I use a variety of music in the classes including Spanish music, some Rock and Roll and some newer pop tunes,” she said.
During the course, Smith teaches students various dances step-by-step. She also provides participants with illustrated handouts depicting the dance steps along with a CD of music they can use to practice at home. Typically, students learn two dances the first night of class. During the second meeting, students review the first two dances before moving on to a third.
“I try to make sure everyone one who comes in gets the lessons,” Smith said. “I want them to feel like they can ask questions. I always ask the class if they feel like they are ready to move on before we start a new dance.”
The course, PEG 1125 Social Dance (Line), will meet from 6 to 7:50 p.m. on Thursdays at Trinity Lutheran Church in Olney. To register or for more information, contact the Student Services Office at 618-395-7777. The class begins on Aug. 19.
