Wabash Community Unit School District #348 Board of Education met Oct. 18.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Wabash Community Unit School District #348, Wabash County, met in Regular Session in the Library of Mt. Carmel Grade School.

Vice President Kyle Peach called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Secretary Janice Alka called the roll. In addition to the Secretary, those present were Neil Earnest, Kyle Peach, Theresa Hocking, and Susan Wood. Tim Schuler and Ryan Peter were absent.

Also present were Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer, MCJSH Principal Andrew Shelby, MCES Principal Jake Newkirk, MCJSH COO Steve Holt, Danielle Ewald – Teacher, Betsy Ross –WCTA, Kevin Madden –WSJD, Maggee Bleyer –Prairie Post, Karen Ensminger – Parent, Robert Kennard –Parent, Abbey Leighty, Karin Kelsey, Daisy Schrader, Lillian Gottman, Anna Gill, Lauren Hall, Emily Gottman, Maria Kennard, Madelyn Young, Alexis Wymer, and District Secretary Kim Zimmer.

A motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Alka and seconded by Earnest. A roll call vote was taken, all present voted AYE. Schuler and Peter were absent. Motion Carried.

Peach asked if there were any Public Comments. There were none.

Reports – MCHS Girls’ Golf Team

Karin Kelsey-MCHS Girls’ Golf Coach introduced the State Championship MCHS Girls’ Golf Team to the Board. The MCHS girls’ golf state champions are: Daisy Schrader, Lillian Gottman, Anna Gill, Lauren Hall, Emily Gottman, Maria Kennard, Madelyn Young, and Alexis Wymer. Abbey Leighty –Volunteer Coach was also present to present the state champions to the Board. They all received a hearty round of applause.

New Business

Employment of Personnel

A motion to approve the following employment recommendations was made by Hocking and seconded by Wood. A roll call vote was taken, all present voted AYE. Schuler and Peter were absent. Motion Carried.

CERTIFIED

Julie Merritt -Part Time ELL Tutor beginning October 4, 2021

Amanda Riggs -MCJHS After School Tutor beginning October 20, 2021

NON-CERTIFIED

Lydia Duncan -MCJSH Head Night Time Custodian beginning October 1, 2021 Kristine York -MCES Part Time Cook beginning October 6, 2021

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

Laura McLemore -MCHS Freshman Class Sponsor beginning October 19, 2021

Dr. Bleyer noted that the Covid cases and quarantines in the District were way down. He also mentioned that due to the food supply chain shortage, that the district’s head cooks were having to adjust the menus every week.

Susan Wood asked if the district paid dues to a national school board association. Dr. Bleyer said he would look into it and let her know. She also asked if varsity players could play on the junior varsity teams. Peach explained that the coach could play a varsity player as long as they were not a senior. Wood asked if ever in the past, the board members were given oversight over specific district functions. Peach explained that the Board hires superintendents to oversee the district and to report information to the Board. Finally, Wood said she would like to pursue sub-teaching in the schools due to the lack of sub teachers.

Adjournment

A motion to adjourn was made by Alka and seconded by Hocking. All present voted aye. Schuler and Peter were absent. Motion Carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
