The controversial SAFE-T Act is a misnomer, State Rep. Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) says. In fact, Niemerg says the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Curtis J. Tarver, II, had an intention other than safety.

“The intent of the SAFE-T act is to increase crime in the suburbs," Niemerg said. "It’s get-even politics from the bill's sponsor. If you don’t believe me then check the record on the last night of session this year. It has nothing to do with SAFETY……as one can clearly see…” Niemerg tweeted.

The SAFE-T Act will enable the release of those who have been charged with crimes like robbery, abduction, arson, second-degree murder, intimidation, aggravated battery, aggravated DUI, aggravated flight, drug-related homicide, and threatening a public officer.

Some have argued that lawbreakers utilize it as a cover to escape punishment and continue committing crimes.

Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and Cook County State Kim Foxx have all been under fire for the rise in violence in Chicago, while Pritzker alone has come under fire for rising crime rates throughout the state.

Pritzker has come under fire from the GOP for the harm anticipated from the SAFE-T Act, which takes effect on January 1, 2023.

“Governor Pritzker has the abnormal and insane governing philosophy that prioritizes the thoughts and feelings of violent criminals above law enforcement and public safety,” Illinois GOP Chairman Don Tracy said. "Four more years of J.B. Pritzker is dangerous for Illinois."

With only 41% of the downtown economic activity prior to COVID, Chicago has one of the weakest post-COVID recoveries.

Chicago, which saw over 1,000 businesses close due to Covid protocols, has now been marginalized mostly as a result of rising crime rates, while other regions of the country have eclipsed economic activity in their core business districts.

Under Foxx's leadership as the state's attorney, crime in Chicago and the surrounding areas has increased.

Citadel Securities claims that security concerns played a significant role in the decision to relocate from Chicago to Miami.

“The firms are having difficulty recruiting top talent from across the world to Chicago given the rising and senseless violence in the city,” Zia Ahmed, a Citadel spokesman, said. “Talent wants to live in cities where they feel safe.”
