Republican gubernatorial candidate and current state Sen. Darren Bailey has long been critical of Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic but is now suggesting the governor should apologize to students.
Bailey took aim at Pritzker on Friday in an Facebook post.
"JB Pritzker owes the students of Illinois an apology," Bailey writes. "Through his unilateral mandates he closed your schools, canceled your proms, ended your athletic careers and took away your moments on stage for graduation. On my watch, this will never happen again. Our kids deserve better."
In the post, Bailey shared a link to a YouTube video where he reflected on the start of high school sports for the new school year and how some kids had those moments taken away during the pandemic.
"This was unacceptable, and as your governor, I promise you I'll keep schools open safely; prioritize the budget to invest in classrooms; and our schools will need to be shut down again on my watch because parents and students deserve better," Bailey says in the video.
Bailey also shared a link where people who wanted to contribute could donate to his campaign in the race for Illinois Governor.
Bailey was the clear choice to challenge Pritzker in the general election. During the June primary, Bailey received more than 57% of the vote or 454,342 votes, WGN-TV reported.
