Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met Feb. 27.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Holly Murphy, Amy Richey, and Leslie Ferrell. Elaine Jackson, Bryan McCabe and B.J. Pigg were absent. Four (4) members present and three (3) members absent. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins. Due to potential severe weather the meeting was moved from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

VISITORS:

Justin Miller from School Financial Services.

EXECUTIVE SESSION:

1. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to enter Executive Session at 6:01 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity; matters of student discipline or review executive session minutes. Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.

Bryan McCabe entered Executive Session at 6:23 p.m.

2. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to end Executive Session at 7:22 p.m. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the Executive Session minutes. Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

PRINCIPAL REPORT:

Mental Health Professionals: There are two grant opportunities available to add mental health professionals into our schools. The first grant is called the School Based Mental Health Project; the initial forms have been filled out to see if our district qualifies for the program. The second grant called Stronger Connections, Matt Buckman from the Stress and Trauma Center will help write the grant.

Saline County Job Fair: The job fair will be March 8 for the juniors and seniors to attend. This is the first one since the Covid shut down.

JH/HS Play: The JH/HS will be performing Beauty and the Beast March 22-23, 2024.

Dual Credits: Danyelle Douglass, Counselor Support Specialist and Ashley Launius, JH/HS Principal met with SIC administrators along with our dual credit instructors. SIC wanted feedback from us on anything we needed for our classes. They suggested a Physical Fitness & Physical Education dual credit class and a CNA class we are looking into offering.

Special Education: Mrs. Launius reported our special education numbers which are currently at 15-18%, the state average is 15%.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:

Counselor: Our counselor from the Egyptian Health Department resigned. They are currently looking for a new counselor for us.

Construction Projects: The projects are moving along well. Bids for the field lighting have been completed and sent out. By the next meeting, the new dugouts should be almost completed and the weight room/concession stand should have the roof completely decked. We have ordered a couple of pop-up tents to use as a concession stand this year.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Athletics:

JH Boys Basketball: The ball team won their regional and played at the SIJHSAA state tournament on February 3, 2024. They did not place at state but had a very successful season. Congratulations boys!

HS Girls Basketball: The girls' placed 3rd in the GEC Tournament. They then earned the right to host a first round regional game beating Harding County on February 10, 2024, before losing to Pope County on February 12, 2024, ending their season.

HS Boys Basketball: The boys' won the consolation bracket of the GEC tournament. The team earned the right to host a first round regional game beating Pope County on February 19, 2024, and will play Meridian on February 21, 2024.

Junior High Volleyball: The volleyball season has started. They earned 3rd place in the Thompsonville tournament on February 17, 2024. Congratulations to Laney Adams receiving all-tournament honors.

Track Co-op: Eldorado High School has offered a track co-op opportunity for both boys and girls this spring. We have six students interested in signing up. Eldorado's school board has approved the co-op; the agreement will need to be approved by our board.

APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA:

4. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to approve the regular meeting minutes of January 23, 2024. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

5. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by Richey to approve the bills and payroll as presented. Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

6. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to approve the treasurer's report and co-mingled account as presented. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Execution Session Motions:

Priority Staffing

7. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to suspend the contract with Priority Staffing for one month, until the next board meeting March 26, 2024. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Custodian

8. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to employ Ricky Pritchett as night time custodian. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Individual Aide

9. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to employ Krystal Strait as an individual aide. McCabe-aye, Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:

Track Co-Op

10. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to approve a high school track co-op with Eldorado School District. Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Policy 5:330

11. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to change Policy 5:330 to reflect the current sick days (14) and personal days (3), per the collective bargaining contract. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

ADJOURNMENT:

12. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by Richey to adjourn at 8:23 p.m. Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
