Wabash Community Unit School District #348 Board of Education met April 17.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Wabash Community Unit School District #348, Wabash County, met for Regular Session on Monday, April 17, 2023 in Cafetorium of Mt. Carmel Grade School.

President Tim Schuler called the regular meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Secretary Janice Alka called the roll. In addition to the secretary, those present were Tim Schuler, Kyle Peach, Susan Wood, and Theresa Hocking. Ryan Peter and Neil Earnest were absent.

Also present were Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer, MCHS Assistant Principal Amy Duckworth, MCJSH COO Steve Holt, MCGS Principal Brianne Foster, MCGS Assistant Principal Tyler Buss, MCES Principal Jake Newkirk, Kevin Madden –WSJD, Herb Meeker –Hometown Register, Dawn Drone –WCEA, Kristi Perry –WCTA, Julie Herman –Teacher, Jamie McCorkle-Parent, Matt McCarty –MCJHS Aide, Kelly McCarty –Parent, Cheyenne Pierce –Parent, Caleb Pierce –Parent, Julie Hagerty –Teacher, Tracie Guard –Teacher, Logan Crum –Teacher, Abby Vaught –Teacher, and District Secretary Kim Zimmer.

President Schuler led the pledge of allegiance to the flag.

A motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Hocking and seconded by Alka. A roll call vote was taken and all present voted AYE. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Neil Earnest were absent.

Superintendent’s Comments

Dr. Bleyer said that Phase 2 for the stadium renovation was progressing nicely. He announced the Brick Marker Campaign would wrap up the end of May.

Spanish with Kindergartners – Julie Hagerty and Tracie Guard Ms. Hagerty and Ms. Guard presented a PowerPoint presentation about their new program. Some of the Spanish 4 students from the high school come once a week to teach beginning Spanish to the Kindergarten classes. Several kindergarteners showed off their Spanish speaking skills with the aid of the Spanish 4 students.

Executive Session pursuant to Section 2 (C)(1) of the Open Meetings Act: “The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees, and student discipline”.

At 7:13 p.m. a motion to go into closed session was made by Peach and seconded by Alka. All present voted AYE. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Neil Earnest were absent.

At 7:37 p.m., a motion to return to open session was made by Hocking and seconded by Alka. All present voted AYE. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Neil Earnest were absent.

A motion to approve the minutes as read in closed session was made by Alka and seconded by Hocking. All present voted AYE. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Neil Earnest were absent.

New Business

Student Discipline

Kyle Peach recommended that Student (GG) be expelled not to exceed (2) years for violating the Student Behavior Section of the District Governing Student Conduct as found in the Student Handbook of the District. Hocking motioned to accept the recommendation as read and Alka seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken and all present voted AYE. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Neil Earnest were absent.
