State Representative Patrick Windhorst recently honored the Weaver Sisters from Massac County in the Illinois House. His tribute, delivered during Women’s History Month, recognized their significant impact on women’s professional baseball.
Windhorst spoke about Betty Weaver Foss, Jean Weaver, and Joanne Weaver, all of whom played for the Fort Wayne Daisies in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. He highlighted their achievements: Betty was Rookie of the Year in 1950 and Player of the Year in 1952; Jean had a standout season in 1953 with a 7-in-1 pitching record; and Joanne won three consecutive batting titles and set records in 1954.
“Their dedication to excellence and love for the game earned them a lasting place in the history of women’s professional baseball,” said Windhorst. He noted that their story inspired parts of the movie "A League of Their Own."
Windhorst concluded by celebrating their legacy not only for their athletic accomplishments but also for advancing opportunities for women. “The contributions made by the Weaver sisters remind us that, indeed, there is no crying in baseball.”
