Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon) recently helped set the stage for Child Abuse Awareness Month.
During floor debate on March 14, Righter presented SR0994, a resolution proclaiming April as Prevent Child Abuse America Month in the state, on behalf of Sen. Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods).
“This is an annual thing that we do,” Righter said.

The resolution details the importance of setting aside 31 days to educate the community on preventing child abuse.
“Research shows that investing in healthy child development reduces the likelihood of a significant array of costly conditions, including chronic health problems, premature mortality, lowered educational achievements, lost productivity, mental illness, violent crime, substance abuse and addiction, and the perpetuation of abuse and neglect,” the resolution reads.
Prevent Child Abuse America started in Chicago in 1972, according to the decree, adding the program supports up to “50-state Chapter Networks and 600-site Health Families Network, which includes 37 sites in Illinois.
“Obviously awareness of child abuse is one of the most critical issues that our society faces and I ask the floor to adopt the resolution,” Righter said.
SR0994 was unanimously adopted.
