The Illinois General Assembly concluded its 2024 spring legislative session with a significant tax increase. Early Wednesday morning, House Democrats approved a $1 billion tax hike to fund new expenditures, including healthcare services for non-citizens and various projects in Democratic districts.

House Republican Floor Leader Patrick Windhorst voiced strong opposition to the budget and tax measures. "As the House Republican Floor Leader, I was intimately involved in the debate over the budget’s spending and implementation and the tax hike package that passed," Windhorst stated. He further noted his dissenting votes: "I voted NO on the record spending $53.1 billion budget package and NO on the $1 billion in new taxes."

Windhorst's comments reflect ongoing partisan tensions regarding fiscal policies within the state legislature.
