Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) used his vote to stop a bill that sought to outlaw trigger acceleration devices on firearms.
Severin voted against the legislation, House Bill 4117, which was stopped in its tracks Oct. 26 when it failed to pass the House, Severin said in a release.
The proposed legislation sought to outlaw all modifications to the trigger mechanism that could accelerate the rate of firing from a firearm.
The legislation was introduced following the mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas, the release stated.
Severin said that the bill could have infringed on the rights of rightful gun owners in the state.
“House Bill 4117 was an attempt to trample on the rights of Illinois’s law abiding gun owners," Severin said in the release. “The bill sought to outlaw the sale, purchase, and ownership of all ‘trigger modification devices’”
Severin said the language of the bill was "vague and quite frankly poorly written.” The way the bill was worded could have left many law-abiding gun owners technically breaking laws.
