As Thanksgiving approaches, Illinois residents are urged to prioritize safety whether they plan to cook at home or travel. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the American Red Cross have provided guidance to help ensure a safe holiday.
The NFPA highlights that Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires in the U.S. To prevent accidents, it is advised to remain in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food and to keep flammable items such as towels and paper away from heat sources. It is also recommended to have a metal lid or baking sheet nearby to smother grease fires if necessary.
With over 132 million people expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year, road safety is also emphasized. Travelers should ensure their vehicles are in good condition, pack an emergency kit with essentials, and check weather forecasts before departing. Avoiding distractions, taking breaks on long trips, and rotating drivers when needed are advised practices. In case of winter weather delays or getting stuck, it is suggested to stay with the vehicle, keep the exhaust pipe clear, and use a brightly colored cloth to signal for help.
Proper preparation can contribute significantly to a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
